SS ’20: Make a Babydoll Statement! #TrendAlert

Think comfy, think breezy, think short and sweet! Closing the Spring-Summer 2020, Babydoll is in, in all its lace, ruffle and fun-filled format!

Babydoll dresses first appeared in 1942, thanks to Sylvia Pedlar, when America saw a fabric-shortage during World War 2, and the rest, as they say, became history! Babydoll gained popularity in 1956 when a movie named Baby Doll came out with Carroll Baker playing the role of a 19-year old nymphet. Paving its way for clothing for adults, it was the era of the ‘kinderwhore’ look that defined the lingerie in the 90s.

Easy Breezy, Soft & Sassy!

Taking the sensuous yet breezy route, the ramps were filled with the Babydoll vibes. With short dresses, ruffles, deep necklines and flowy fabrics, it was a whole lotta feminine affair to fall for. The Brock Collection reminded us of detailings that are essential. With bows, ruffles and flared dresses, it was beauty in minimalism. Eckhaus Latta’s collection presented lacework with crochet while Giambattista Valli was all about ruffles like waves on pastel tones.

One of the main highlights was Cecilie Bahnsen’s collection. An ode to the femininity and its grace, these loose-fitted outfits were a reminder of little miss sunshine. Meanwhile, JW Anderson played with knitted fabrics with skimpy add-ons. Philosophy di Lorenzo took an evening wear route with ruffled fabrics, textures and bows, that were made for the red carpet.

Many other designers took this effortlessly chic trend and translated them with their visions. From Oscar de la Renta’s off-shoulder party wear, Miu Miu and Moda Operandi’s pret look to Moschino’s art-inspired and Zimmermann’s play of lace, there was a lot to check out!

Little Miss Sunshine!

After all the runway love, it was time for some red carpet love too. A celeb fave that was seen everywhere, from Sarah Hyland’s couture version to Taylor Swift’s black and white one, a lot was going on. Katy Perry, Jennifer Aniston and J Lo were some of the others flaunting their polished and playful side.

On the home front too, there was a barrage of celebs waiting to style this trend up! Disha Patani, Kiara Advani, Kim Sharma, Maanvi Gagroo, Nargis Fakhri and Sara Ali Khan were showing off their Babydoll looks from dawn to dusk.
