Rebellion is strong in the air as Autumn Winter 2021 takes on a messy muse! This season it’s time to layer up with a Grunge mood, complete with plaid, rips and frays!
To think of Grunge is to think of distressed denims, baggy silhouettes and well-worn plaid shirts. Think Kurt Cobain in those flannel shirts and a messy hairdo, Drew Barrymore in leather jackets and layered accessories. Johnny Depp, Keanu Reeves and Winona Ryder in graphic tees! And of course, Courtney Love, with her Grunge meets feminine aesthetics!
A style associated with ‘90s punk rock bands and musicians, this trend goes back even to the ‘80s! But it’s not just about layering on all black or loose fits, after all! To Grunge is to put together that effortlessly careless look carefully! Strategic layering with striped button-downs and tanks paired with frayed and ripped denims is a foolproof way. Top it with some heavy, chunky boots and some chain linking, and it’s good to go!
Designer’s Go Grunge
It’s a plunge into Grunge this season on the runway, too! From Vivienne Westwood to Marc Jacobs, designers reminisced on the ‘90s style statement this AW 2021 with plenty of layers, angst and rebellion! Vivienne Westwood, as always, kept true to her anarchic aesthetics. Asymmetric cuts with a clash of tartans and plaids were prominent! On the other hand, Alice + Olivia added a darker take to plaid in preppy plus grunge styles. Chopova Lowena paired pleated plaid skirts with smooth leather tops and chunky accessories. At the same time, Givenchy went all-in with shredded looks and heavy layering!
Speaking of layers, Junya Watanabe piled on snug layers with vibrant sweaters on breezy skirts with edgy accessories for some chic punk vibes. On the other hand, Kenzo was all about de-emphasising layers in bright colours and prints! Resident grunge kid Marc Jacobs put on a show in gender-neutral, large OTT layers! Complete with saturated shades, exaggerated turtle necks and an iridescent touch! Marni, too, opted for an oversized appeal with layers. At the same time, Dolce & Gabbana layered with frilly tutus and sports shoes, finished off with graffiti.
Celebs Punk It Up
Celebs love the ‘90s nostalgia for sure! From Ananya Panday and Bella Hadid to Beyonce and Karishma Kapoor, it’s a layer laden love with all A-stars alike!
Hailey Bieber added a messy vibe with a green flannel and a trucker hat. While on the other hand, Kendall Jenner opted to go dark in washed out, frayed denims, leather layers and chains! Miley Cyrus unleashed her inner punk rock goddess in an all-black graphic tee, layered chain accessories and a beret. At the same time, singer Daya went casual in exaggeratedly ripped jeans and a comfy sweatshirt! Bella Hadid chose to layer up vintage with an oversized blazer and pearls paired with a plaid headband, very rocker chic!
On the other hand, Emma Corrin grunged up with asymmetrical pleats, chunky boots and lace! Pop stars Billie Eilish and Mo chilled out in some OTT looks. At the same time, Hey Violet’s lead, Rena Lovelis punked it up in bulky accessories in chains!
B-wood too dabbled in layering up laid back this season! Anushka Sharma opted cozy with a hint of punk in ripped jeans and an oversized hoodie, while Sonali Bendre pulled on a comfy hoodie for a laid-back look! Gen Z’ers Shanaya Kapoor and Ahsaas Channa rocked old school grunge in a graphic jacket and sweatshirt paired with black shades, respectively! For Jacqueline Fernandez and Parineeti Chopra, loose layers in black were the way to go. On the other hand, Karishma Kapoor and Santoshi Shetty were all in for printed tees and chains! And Kalki Koechlin grooved to a playful beat in plaid!
