SS’21: The OTT Ways of Sleeves! #TrendAlert

Puffed sleeves have been an on and off trend for years. Reminiscent of the Victorian era, this Spring Summer 2021, the decadent puff marks its bangin’ return on the runway!

Initially an ode to Victorian romanticism, the balloon sleeves have been translated to various iterations over the years. From exaggerated maximalism to variations in the structure, designers have experimented this season with a dramatic flair. From Leg-o-mutton, balloon-y bishop sleeves to oversized, voluminous forms, this trend is larger-than-life this season.

A Puff of History

The exaggerated puffed-up sleeve was a regular shoulder adornment during the Rennaisance Era. However, by the turn of the 19th century, it saw a more toned-down development. Moving away from the multi-layered puffiness, women moved on to long and loose sleeve styles. The puff sleeves saw their reemergence in the 80s when legendary fashion mogul, Christian Lacroix, made it his new muse. His ‘Pouf” dress blew the fashion scene away!

Blowing up on the Runway

Since its iconic return, the puff sleeves have taken over as the go-to silhouette, and this season was an ode to that. Designers were seen revelling in its flamboyant appeal, with ruffles, layers and breezy fabrics taking over to steal the show! Zimmermann explored gathered and flowy sleeve styles with a variety of necklines. On the other hand, Alexander McQueen played with a punk meets princess aesthetics as part of their Modern Fairytale theme. Oversized Leg-o-mutton in all kinds of metallic was the choice for Carolina Hererra. Speaking of materials and construction details, Loewe tastefully juxtaposed balloon sleeves with leather pants or structured pleats for his collection.

Celebs on the large

Several celebs have favoured the extravagance of the dramatised sleeve. From Lili Reinhart’s off-the-shoulder polka dot puffs to Aditi Rao Hydari’s floral bishop sleeves for a casual day out. H-town and B-town have embraced this trend full-throttle. Another connoisseur of this sleeve trend, Lady Gaga, channelled major retro vibes in a high slitted monochrome dress with an ah-mazing sweetheart neckline to compliment the decadent sleeves. She completes her look with pearl accessories and cat-eye glares. Nicola Coughlan, Sonam Kapoor and JLo opt to stun in an ethereal white ensemble.

While Selena Gomez chose a neutral palette to flaunt this style, Nora Fatehi and Lilly Singh glammed it up in shimmery metallic. On the other hand, Priyanka Chopra and Neha Kakkar opted for a fresh green hue for their heavily gathered sleeves.
