A Powerful History
Most of the major trends of this season are bright, positive, and powerful. One such powerful take is of strong and sharp shoulders. This SS’21, the fashion world embraced the power shoulders with a femme fatale edge like never before. Sharp shoulders have their roots in the 1930s, courtesy of fashion surrealist, Elsa Schiaparelli. Her inspiration for that upside-down triangular-shaped shoulders were the American Football players. Bringing that androgynous style into the feminine world was quite a feat in that era. Edgy shoulders style really took off around World War II as more and more women started entering workspaces. In a race to fit in a male-dominated space, women took their fashion through an androgynous update!
Shoulder Stride On-Ramps
While edgy shoulders are a sign of power and strength, the fashion aura this season is just as edgy as this trend. Designers like Balmain went with pagoda edges in classic suiting, which was a classic take. While Carolina Herrera had blouses with winged shoulders, Maison Margiela’s buttoned styles were femme fiery for real!
While Bottega Venetta’s collection was all work vibes with sharp shoulder suits, Alexander McQueen was signature with its edgy suits! Mugler’s slight punky, slight edgy suit-dress was powerful no less. And, with Givenchy’s squared structures to its garments, it was a feisty festival. While ramps were buzzing with fiery shoulders, these structured, elevated styles are OTT with pleats, heels, and a little drama.
Sharp & Edgy Limelight
Celebrities have never shied away from a little power show. With fiery, strong, and sharp shoulders, everyone got a chance to flaunt their strong look. From Jennifer Lopez, and Hailey Beiber to Celine Dion, and Sarah Paulson, strong edgy shoulders were the fashion highlight! While Regina King went all butterfly with strong winged shoulders, Kerry Washington replicated the same with a lower tone, but equally powerful look.
On the home front too, celebs were seen flaunting their power looks. From Nora Fatehi’s feminine body-hugging gown with strong sharp shoulders to Kiara Advani and Priyanka Chopra’s literal take on sharp shoulder suits, it was time to be bolder. Amy Jackson with her literal sharp shoulder outfit combined with backtraced hair, and Mouni Roy in her monotone CBD with edgy shoulders – it was a power trip hard to ignore!
