Taking a trip back to the 70s, Spring Summer 2019 is bringing Grunge back in a different avatar! Any guesses? Let us give you a hint – It’s all about the love for lace.
After the designers take on fringes, ruffles and all things that say party out loud, the ramps are not quite done yet. And with another trend joining in, we discover just that! Introducing another addition to your party wear collection, it’s time for lace to show up – with a makeover. Shaking off all girlhood connotations and the image of the sweet girl-next-door, the trend took a different look this fashion season. With a bold, confident and ‘sliced’ look, there is nothing this lace change isn’t prepared for, we guarantee.
A trend that has been part of fashion since the 15th century, the time for feminine lace has blown over after all these decades. Taking a new turn with inspiration lying in the Grunge Era, lace became a whole lot bolder and confident. And the global ramps and runways saw a whole lot of it. While Victoria Beckham’s sliced and diced lace hemlines paired with layers won hearts, there was also Alberta Ferretti mixing sheer clothing and slips with lace. From a patchwork to full trousers, lace is surely going for the big win.
THE GRUNGE LACE
Spring Summer 2019 brought on a new side of lace that is unlike all its previous connotations. On one hand, Alexander McQueen’s black lace & leather combo with chokers made us flashback to the 70s, while on the other Alexis Mabille played with lace additions as an undertone to his dresses showing off minimalism at its best. Including lace stripes in between striped or printed clothing seems like an absolute genius and truly ready-to-wear this season.
These fashion aficionados didn’t just stop there. Elie Saab ruled the runway with his gutsy yet playful blend of lace with prints and patchwork. Our favourite was the skater dress with diagonal patchworks of lace and colourful fabrics paired with thigh high boots. Less feminine and far from minimal, this season lace has a bold avatar that you’re bound to notice.
Christopher Kane took a turn to display his collection of sheer clothes and lace hemlines with dark backgrounds that surely reminded us of the Grunge way. While Chloe, Givenchy, Altuzarra, Off White, and Isabel Marant followed their own interpretations with prints, belted dresses and leather boots. Evening wear took a turn towards monochrome colours and colour blocking this season, with all the edgy vibes.
Celebrities & Lace 2.0
With the ramps on lace power and sheer fire, celebrities weren’t far behind in taking the next step. From Hailee Steinfeld, Gal Gadot, Olivia Munn to Maisie Williams, Katrina Kaif and Shraddha Kapoor, lace was all over and true to its extravagant form. With lace overflowing from every direction, there’s only one thing left to do – Choose the piece you want.
