SS ’19: The Net Fashion Has Gone Hip! #Trendalert

We’re on the brink of the new season, but our summer vibe isn’t quite over yet! Continuing to be in the mood of ropes, knots and nettings, we’re here with a new trend that’s a must-catch of the season. We’re talking about the Fishnet trend!

Originating in the 19th century, Fishnet was a part of stockings and majorly became popular due to the women in Moulin Rouge. Introducing the fishnet trend to the world of acting, dancing and free-love, this trend was associated with all things Paris. Moving away from its 19th-century context, fishnet became a staple amongst the punk crowd in the 70s and the grunge of the 90s. Thanks to the contributions of Madonna and the likes, the trend took a diversion to became a classic addition.

Nothing But Net

Making a comeback this Spring Summer 2019, fishnet has made a comeback and that too with a hippie vibe. Taking inspiration from a rather literal means – a fishing net, this season fashion took a new turn with tassels, knots, netting and weaves. From being worn as a dress with a hoodie at Pyer Moss to layering fishnet over fishnet at Altuzarra, fishnet was everywhere. Ready to catch seashells and more.

Many designers were taking over the ramps with their interpretations of this trend. Beginning from Christian Dior with their subdued tones and loosely woven additions, it was a new layering to try out in the heat. Dion Lee, on the other hand, went along with black & white reversible netting and added extensions with lace dresses and tight to loosely woven textures. Peeking in and out with movement, it was an eye-catching colour play.

Mesh, Nets & What Knots

Staying true to the trend’s origin yet with a boho vibe, Akris and Dolce & Gabbana created a range in black that said grungy yet pretty like nothing else. Akris’s translation of fishnet into a black jacket blew the audience and us away while D&G caught the vibe with its fishnet between print. The print play was also visible with Paco Rabanne’s translation of shiny weaves over all kinds of prints. From trousers to skirts, the metallic finish was the apt summer layering. Louis Vuitton too took the metallic mesh way and created dresses to subtle additions paired up with solids.

Area, Ports 1961, JW Anderson and Salvatore Ferragamo were some of the other designers who were flooring the ramps with their collections. Including fishnet as patchwork between clothes and layering it up over shoulders, shirts etc., there were tassels everywhere! And no one was complaining. Area’s version of fishnet was the combo we all needed – the power suit with the right amount of shine.

Celebs & The Meshy Affair

While the ramps were surely following the fishnet trend to the t, the celebs were not too far behind with their picks. From Zendaya’s talk show power suit to Katy Perry’s on-stage ensemble, there was fishnet all over the town. Brie Larson, Kiara Advani, Sandra Oh, Priyanka Chopra and Miley Cyrus were some of the other celebrities flaunting their casual yet hippie vibe.
