The trend of embellishing denim goes back to the 1970s San Francisco and the movement against the dehumanizing effects of mass production and consumerism. The hippie-bohemian aesthetic was inspired by punk looks, and an act of self-expression where denim was peppered with embroideries, illustrations and ornamental symbols/motifs.
This Spring Summer 2022 runways and fashion weeks had a grand display of embellishments on denim by fashion houses like Dolce & Gabbana, Etro, Isabel Marant, Zadig et Voltaire. Brands like Zara, Mango and Farfetch also created denim styles with rhinestones and subtle embroidery works inspired by the runway looks.
