AW 19/20: Checks Fashion 101 #Trendalert

Plaids, Gingham, Argyle, Checker board….there are n number of ways to describe it, but it’s all about one pattern. Can you make a guess?

‘Let the checks take over!’ was definitely the call of this season with ramps and runways flooded with this print. From patchwork to windowpane to even haphazard ones, there were checks on all. This Autumn-Winter 2019/20 checks took the route of remixed heritage, with one end being nostalgic towards the 1990s grunge era (See: Plaid flannel shirts of Nirvana & Pearl Jam) and the other talking to the feminist. From hats to shoes, checks took overall, in just a snap.

Runway Checks

A special mention to Christian Dior’s collection as they took over the checks print like no other. With plaid trousers, coats, tulle skirts, dresses and even scarves, Maria Grazia Chiuri was on a rampage. And checks were her muse.

From plaid to tartan and everything in between, many other designers were up to bring their versions of the plaid play. AWAKE’s version of fitted trousers, dresses and multiple colour print overlay, was a new take on checks, in all its chicness. Meanwhile, Alexander McQueen focused on creating structured pantsuits and. Burberry too joined in the check play with their heritage checks and created a patchwork print. Chanel’s collection, which was an ode to Karl Lagerfeld had all the makings of a winter dress-up. With checks coats and jumpsuits in black and white, it was a meet of classic and trend.

Gucci, JW Anderson, Loewe, Marni, Vivienne Westwood and Oscar de la Renta also brought forward their check techniques. From windowpane checks at Victoria Beckham & Gucci to colour blocking at JW Anderson, this season plaid was upbeat and confident. Oscar de la Renta’s collection comprised of patchwork checks in two formats while at Loewe’s coats went from Madras checks to solid-check mix. One thing was sure, designers were surely not done with checks yet.

Check Check Celeb

After all the runways and ramps spelling out checks with enunciation, celebrities were definitely not staying behind in hearing it right – and styling it too. Zendaya was already standing ahead of the crowd with her collaboration with Tommy Hilfiger for a check-ful fall line that brought back the 70s. Meanwhile, Billie Eilish’s most recent AMA’s outfit had her going for best dressed (besides the New Artist Award, of course).

Kaia Gerber’s coat of the year to Lily Collins movie outfit, there was a lot to take away. Priyanka Chopra, Hillary Duff, Alia Bhatt, Ananya Panday, and even Queen B herself, were set to check the checkbox for checks.
