It’s a craft state of mind this Spring Summer 2020! And we’re totally up to experiment with this trend – from clothes to accessories!
Taking a route of sustainability, recycling and upcycling became the focus this season, like never before. Add on embroidery or create a patchwork, work with lace or change the game with leather patches, it’s all about mending it up!
Patch It Up!
The designers too followed the theme of ‘Make It Do or Do Without’ this season. While Alexander McQueen upcycled lace, organza and tulles of the previous season, Gucci added cutwork, leather and lace patchwork to sheer clothing. Isabel Marant, on the other hand, took the route of sequins-it-up, cut-up denim and lacework to create dresses, while Marc Jacobs incorporated applique work and embroidery to retro silhouettes. From jackets to puffed sleeve dresses, a lot was going on!
While Dolce and Gabbana went all out and created a range of lacework dresses and matching headscarves, Christian Dior, on the other hand, was all about floral embroidery work. With flowy gowns, tassels and handwork, there were Earthy tones and colours strewn across the ramps, with the show decorated with sand and trees. Eckhaus Latta & Marni also included embroidery handworks to their collections.
Loewe’s collection was an ode to the 16th and 17th-century where handwork and intricacy went hand in hand. With macrame lace dresses, tassel additions and patchwork, it was about adding details. Simone Rocha too followed the use-less motto with his delicate embroidery work and lace trimmings on the hem. Whereas Valentino took to adding feather-like strands, sequins and floral borders. Oscar de la Renta, Zimmermann and Prabal Gurung too showcased their solidarity with this trend with all kinds of cutwork and laces.
Celebrity Mends
While Natalie Portman flaunted her Goddess like look with intricate golden embroidery (also standing for women’s equality), Laura Dern & Youssra’s red carpet looks gave us all sorts of giddiness. Following the love of lace, Gal Gadot, Renee Zellweger and Rooney Mara were seen flaunting their ethereal looks. Winnie Harlow posed for Vogue in a patchwork piece while Anushka Sharma had a lace one for her Grazia shoot.
On the home ground, too, celebrities were picking up and standing tall with the recycling trend. From Priyanka Chopra, Aditi Rao Hydari, Malaika Arora, Kriti Sanon to Deepika Padukone, Shruti Hassan, Shraddha Kapoor & even Kareena Kapoor, the stars were dazzling in their lace and embroidered outfits. With a medley of craftiness and casual at its best, this trend was a quick pick up for everyone.
