SS’20: The European Mode of Drama #TrendAlert

We’re going back to the 18th Century and definitely taking you for a ridealong! With hair all decked up and gowns with hoops, there’s a new trend in town!

Taking a trip down the French courts and the era of Madame de Pompadour, this trend takes inspiration from the gowns of this fashionable, inofficial Queen. The chief mistress of Louis XV, she had an extraordinary taste in dress, art and decoration. With intricate detailing, her flouncy dresses were consistently captured on canvases by various artists. Frilled sleeves, panniered gowns and ruffled necklines reflected the 18th Century grandeur like nothing else. With hooped skirts and sumptuous curves, Spring summer 2020 is celebrating the trend and asking you to flaunt your curves. And to do so in style.

 The French Theatrics

With the trend ready to rage, the ramps and runways were all set to explore their genres. While Balenciaga had a head-to-toe monotone shade with hooped skirts, Thom Browne had a different angle to present. With patchwork, art print, pastel hues and veils, there was a whole lotta drama visible. Prabal Gurung’s collection included feathers for emphasis, while Proenza Schouler showcased it via drapes. Rick Owen’s collection was a blend of sci-fi and panniered silhouettes. With draped fabrics and slit skirts, there were fabric folds around the waist to accentuate the hipline.

Loewe decided to present a subtler take on the trend with neutral shades and flounces over pants and skirts. Alexander McQueen, on the other hand, incorporated a range of vibrant tones with ruffles and tiers. Richard Quinn’s collection too took us back to the European aura with all-over prints, bows and tulle additions. Who said Pompadour was not in-trend anymore? Giambattista Valli also portrayed this vivacious look with balloon-like gowns and ruffle add-ons.

After all the European drama on the ramps, the celebs were all set to blow us away with their avatars. From Ariana Grande’s grey Grammy’s outfit to Reese Witherspoon’s Vanity Fair shoot with a bow on top, there were a lot of colours and flamboyance in the air. From Kylie Jenner, Cardi B, Lily-Rose Depp to Cynthia, Kristen Stewart and Thandie Newton, celebs were walking audaciously. On the homefront too, Bollywood stars like Kriti Sanon, Sara Ali Khan, Sayani Gupta, Shruti Hassan, Sonam Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, Bhumi Pednekar and Nora Fatehi were all boldly taking over red carpets and giving us serious partywear goals.
