SS’20: It’s a Total Blackout! #TrendAlert

Black is making a comeback this season, in all its haunting and daunting ways! Spring-Summer 2020 just got a new colour trend people!! And that too, a universally loved one.

Quoting Coco Chanel, “When I find a colour darker than black, I’ll wear it. But until then, I’m wearing black!”, holds true for all of us. Even though we like all the vibrant colours of the rainbow, Black holds a special place in our hearts. And this season, it’s all about going head-to-toe in this colour trend or pairing it up with vibrant hues – which honestly, we don’t mind. At. All.

The colour Black became a statement during the #MeToo Movement that started in 2017 and then later with the Times Up Movement of 2018, where women stood in solidarity against sexual harassment. The Golden Globes red carpet was filled with these neutral-powered outfits as well. Later a group of US Congresswomen also donned this shade, standing in unison with sexual misconduct. Needless to say, this shade has an undeniable power that can bring people together or showcase a point of view.

Powered in Black

While the colour was making a statement everywhere, the designers too, were ready to bring on their interpretations. Rick Owens’s collection showcased a vision in OTT that held connotations of the future and what the warrior woman would don for a fight. With power shoulders, cut-outs, boots and embellishments, there was a feminine vibe attached to the drama as well. Michael Kors, on the other hand, took a party route. Adding shimmer to Black combined with pleats and ruffles, it was the attention-seeking outfit made for all evening events.

Christopher Kane’s collection was inspired by the cosmos with little starry additions to this dark background, making it out-worldly. Meanwhile, Simone Rocha introduced lace, tied and dyed Raffia and metallic fringes for a flowy effect. Layering it up on suits and skirts, the mood was, Black for everything. Valentino played with puffed shoulders while Alexander McQueen had white embroidery, lace additions on leather and recycled fabrics to flaunt.

Chanel’s feminine take on Black with short shorts and pleated skirts added a lady-like vibe to this hue. While the Row was all about being subtle, Stella McCartney’s collection had a chic, romantic vibe to it. With scalloped edges, B/W combos and a very sensuous lace outfit, the air felt timeless. From Alberta Ferretti’s cutwork, Alice and Olivia’s sequined look to D&G’s head-to-toe lace and Iro’s flared sleeves and leather jacket. Black was everywhere, for everything and for every occasion in the book!

Go Ink-Black All Over

While the ramps were in love with this witchy hue, the celebrities too showed off their love for it. From power looks of Natalie Portman, Kristen Stewart, Nicole Kidman, Shraddha Kapoor and Gal Gadot, to standing-out in pitch dark shades with Zendaya, Taapsee Pannu, Kriti Sanon and Regina King, Black was the colour of the season, without a doubt.

Zazie Beetz, Ellen Degeneres, Emma Roberts, Ariana Grande, Saoirse Ronan and JLo too, were flaunting their shimmer in Black. On the homefront too, there was a whole barrage of celebrities ready with their Black outfits. From Dia Mirza, Ananya Panday, Sonakshi Sinha, Diana Penty to Parineeti Chopra, Priyanka Chopra, Rhea Chakraborty, Yami Gautam and Sonam Kapoor – EVERYONE was gorgeous in Black.
